There’s no need for Minh La or Victor Su, owners of Chino Locos, to ever have go to a high-school reunion. This is because their flagship restaurant on Greenwood Avenue is located right across the street from their old school and familiar faces from the good old days are always making an appearance at their fusion Mexican-Asian eatery. “It’s cool to be back here with a business,” says Minh. "I remember what Chino Locos used to be. It was an ice cream parlour. I know because I used to come in each morning and buy something.”

Now the eatery produces a fresh array of what Minh calls “new” Mexican burritos. This means a combination of familiar flavours with a quirky and tasty Asian twist. This is why you can pick up the likes of jerk chicken, General Tao chicken, BBQ boneless ribs, chow mein and Korean beef. “I studied culinary arts at George Brown and worked in loads of different cuisines before opening Chino Locos with Victor,” says Minh. “We’re Chinese as well, so we naturally introduced some of that cooking into the burritos.” Toronto diners have responded well, with the restaurant opening a second location in East China Town just one year after the original spot opened in 2008.
